Q: What are you trying to do with Current Lab?
Kevin Rosa: We all know the weather forecasts. You wouldn’t want to get on a plane if the pilot didn’t know what the weather was going to be like along the way. And that weather forecast is generated by a computer weather model.
You can do something similar for the ocean. If a ship wants to get from Newport to Miami, they need to know what the currents and waves will be like along the way. And so what The current Lab makes predictions of the state of the oceans and then make that data useful to customers.
That’s the idea – basically a weather forecast for ocean conditions, currents, waves, temperature, etc.
Question: How does your solution work in practice?
Rose: If I’m a sailor and I’ve just come to Newport for a big event and I want to know in great detail… what the local knowledge is of what the current is going to do, they can pay to use the Current Lab Web app. It’s like a map with an overlay of its own, very detailed currents and you can see how it flows around the islands. And you can click ahead hour by hour and see how the direction and speed will change throughout the race course.
On the other end of the spectrum, if I’m a company and I’m building ocean drones that cruise around… you can use the Current Lab API, which is kind of a technical backend. They can plug their application into our data sets and… instead of just having to look at a screen, they can send Current Lab forecasts to all their ocean drones. They can use that to route them better.
Q: When did you think this could be a viable idea?
Rose: I think it was in 2021 and the US Olympic sailing team had reached out and said, Hey, we’re having a big problem trying to predict the currents in Tokyo… We heard from the America’s Cup team (who was my first customer), we heard you have this new solution.’ And so I worked with them and then was approached by a number of other potential clients. And then I kind of realized, hey, I think I should dedicate my time to Current Lab full-time.
Q: What are you currently offering to customers?
Rose: The easy part is that if you are a sailor and you want to know the currents for an upcoming race, we offer a kind of race packages – they are called GRIB files (ocean data packages). That’s a standard way you can visualize currents on your device or on your computer.
I’m currently (also) working on a few pilot programs with companies that want to plug directly into our data sets… That would mean, for example, a company has an ocean drone and they have software that allows you to drone around the ocean and they would put our data on their software and they could use it to get more energy-efficient or faster routes. And there can be many different types of use cases in shipping, in aquaculture… It’s more of a customized approach.
Q: Is there anyone else doing something similar?
Rose: A lot of this is done by government groups – so the (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) in the US, and then there’s a European equivalent.
How that works is they will run some ocean forecast models and then make that data available. There’s not really an option to go to NOAA and say, ‘Hey, you have a model of the Chesapeake Bay. Can you do one of Long Island Sound now?’ … It’s just what’s available, what you get.
With Current Lab I’m really trying to offer an alternative to that system, where you as a small company can easily get immediate access to data in a kind of live prediction model.
Q: What are you trying to achieve with Current Lab?
Rose: My goal would be for Current Lab to become synonymous with a one-stop shop for world-class oceanographic data.
There’s so much value in having forecasts and, you know, ocean data, but it’s really scattered and inaccessible and inaccurate right now. And I don’t think you have to be an expert to use this data. I think you have to be the expert at what you do and you can just go to our lab and say, “Hey, we just need to know what the temperatures are going to be or what the currents are going to be.” ?’ And know very easily that you will get the best result in return.
